Email Blocklists and How Delisting Works

Not every listing matters equally. Which lists providers query, how removal works, and why express delisting is a scam.

What is an email blocklist?

Blocklists (also called DNSBLs or RBLs) are databases of IP addresses and domains that have been reported for sending spam. Mailbox providers and spam filters query them in real time, so a listing on Spamhaus, SpamCop, or Barracuda can send your mail straight to spam or get it rejected outright.

What this checker does

Enter a domain and we resolve its A record and MX server IPs, then check the domain and each IP against high-signal DNS blocklists. You get a per-list verdict, the exact host that is listed, and the return code the blocklist published.

What to do if you are listed

Fix the root cause before requesting removal: secure compromised accounts, close open relays, and stop sending to addresses that complain. Then follow the delisting process on the blocklist operator’s site. Most listings clear within a few days once the spam stops, and ongoing monitoring catches relistings early.

Which listings actually matter

They are not equal. A Spamhaus ZEN or DBL listing is serious because major providers query it directly. Barracuda and SpamCop matter at some receivers. Many of the hundreds of small lists are queried by almost nobody, and paying for express delisting on one of those buys you nothing. Check who actually uses a list before you panic about it.

How long delisting takes

SpamCop listings expire on their own within about a day once the spam stops. Spamhaus removals are usually processed within hours of a valid request, but relist immediately if the cause is still live. The delay that hurts is not the operator’s queue, it is the time between the listing appearing and somebody noticing it.

Check yours now

Run the free blocklist checker on your domain. It resolves your A record and MX hosts and queries the domain and those IPs separately, which is what tells you whether the listing is yours to fix or your provider’s. Then confirm nothing else is broken with the free email health check.

How to get delisted from an email blocklist

Find the cause of a listing, fix it, and request removal.

  1. Confirm what is listedCheck the domain and each mail server IP separately. A listed IP and a listed domain have different causes and different fixes.
  2. Read the listing reasonMost operators publish a reason and a return code. Spam traps, a compromised account, and a shared-IP neighbour are three very different problems.
  3. Fix the cause firstSecure any compromised mailbox, close open relays, remove the addresses that complained, and stop the send that triggered it. Requesting removal before this gets you relisted.
  4. Submit the removal requestUse the operator's own delisting form. Never pay a third party for express removal on a list that offers free self-service.
  5. Watch for a relistingRe-check over the following days. A listing that comes straight back means the root cause is still there.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is this blocklist checker free?

Yes. Checking a domain and its mail server IPs against major blocklists is free, no account required.

Which blocklists do you check?

High-signal DNS blocklists that mailbox providers actually consult: Spamhaus ZEN, Spamhaus DBL, Barracuda, SpamCop, CBL, PSBL, Mailspike, and the Sender Score blocklist. We check your domain plus its A record and MX server IPs.

Does a listing always hurt deliverability?

Not equally. A Spamhaus listing is severe because major providers use it, while smaller lists have less impact. Treat any listing as a warning sign and investigate the cause.

How do I get delisted?

First stop the behavior that caused the listing, then submit a removal request on the blocklist operator's website. Some lists expire automatically within 24 to 48 hours once spam reports stop.

How do I check if my domain is blacklisted?

Enter it above. The checker resolves your A record and MX hosts and queries the domain and those IPs against each list, so you see whether the problem is the domain, the sending IP, or both.

Why is my IP listed but not my domain?

Usually because the IP is shared. On a shared sending pool, another customer's spam can list the IP while your domain stays clean. Ask your provider to move you, or move to a pool with better hygiene.
